MTV launches online video channel

Cable TV network MTV has unveiled a new web-based channel that will broadcast some of its shows over the internet.

By CBR Staff Writer

MTV Overdrive will offer music videos, previously aired programs and trailers for upcoming films. Viewers will also receive four-times-daily news updates from MTV’s News operation.

This latest announcement by the station has been seen as a move to exploit what industry observers have reported as a growth in internet advertisements. It joins Walt Disney, TiVo and software giant Microsoft, which released its MSN Video Downloads service last month. The Washington Post has also made plans to enter the online market by acquiring Slate, an online magazine, from Microsoft last December.

MTV said its new web site will feature 15-second advertisements from Microsoft, Procter & Gamble and Sony Pictures. It is expected to launch fully on 25 April.
