The channel utilizes the latest version of Microsoft’s Windows media player (WMP 11), which Windows users will shortly receive as an upgrade. Urge will use WMP 11’s navigation, allowing users to download and purchase music without opening a new window.
Initially Urge will feature more than two million tracks, and will match Apple’s iTunes service by selling them individually for 99 cents. However, Urge will not be compatible with Apple’s Macintosh computers or the iPod digital music player. Full albums will also be available for download starting at $9.95.
MTV’s service will also feature streaming videos, with downloadable versions becoming available for purchase later this year.
