The company claimed several improvements in Firefox 3.0, including security features and tools, a redesign of the bookmarking and browser history and several back-end platform enhancements.
According to the company, security features include malware check, a phishing filter-like feature that warns users for suspected malicious code hosting, one-click site information that displays site ownership, fixes for vulnerabilities in plug-in updating, and integration with antivirus software and Windows Vista’s parental control settings. The company has also added a new feature, named Places, which will store browsing history in a database.
Mozilla expects the second version of beta to be launched by the end of 2007, followed by a final beta 3 update in the early 2008. It also expects approximately half a million users to test its software by the time the finished product is launched in 2008.
Firefox 3.0 Beta 1 can be downloaded for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux in 21 language versions from the company’s website.
Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE) is also preparing to launch next version of its browser by April 2008. With the new version of IE, Microsoft is plans to drop Active X warning from the browser.
