MOTOROLA’S FOUNDRY OUTSOURCING CONTINUES WITH TSMC

By CBR Staff Writer

Motorola Inc has announced a manufacturing alliance with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd, as part of its move to shift chip production over to third parties. TSMC will produce .35 and .25 micron CMOS logic parts for Motorola, which will also gain access to systems-on-a-chip and embedded flash memory expertise through the deal. Motorola sold off two of its own chip assembly plants in Taiwan and Korea to the ASE Group earlier this month, and has said it plans to outsource up to 35% of its semiconductor manufacturing to foundries over the next three years, not including joint ventures.
