It appears that there will be one source of supply of large numbers of PowerPC-based personal computers apart from Apple Computer Inc. Nanjing Shuanqiang of Shanghai says it expects to be producing personal computers at 100,000 a year this year. Nanjing Shuanqiang is a joint venture between Motorola Inc and Nanjing Panda Electronics Co Ltd, and most of the output will be exported under the Motorola brand name, although Motorola sees a window of opportunity in the Chinese market. The machines are intended to run Mac OS. The firm plans to double its annual capacity to 200,000 over the next three or four years. Funded to the tune of $12.2m, the firm is 60% owned by Motorola and 40% by Nanjing Panda.
