The company said its initial chipset would focus on core 802.16e WiMax functionality supporting voice, video, and data for low power mobile applications in handsets and modules.

The chipsets would first hit the market in Motorola WiMax devices in 2008 for carriers, including Sprint, in North America, Japan and elsewhere, said Motorola.

Schaumburg, Illinois Motorola has become a major support of the emerging WiMax technology. Earlier this month, the company announced a partnership with Sprint Nextel’s planned nationwide WiMax network. During the past few months, Motorola has announced it would deploy a national WiMax networks in Pakistan and a trial network in Japan.
