In yet another earnest that after many years of dithering and dabbling, Motorola Inc really is serious about its $300m or so a year computer business this time, the company has given the Tempe, Arizona Motorola Computer Group its first ever general manager – at the same time robbing Taligent Inc of its one recognisable name, that of chairman and chief executive Joe Guglielmi. General manager of IBM Corp Power Personal Systems Division software development Dick Guarino, who was part of the team that put together the original Apple Computer Inc-IBM alliance and was on the Taligent board from March 1992 to December 1993 becomes acting chief executive while a replacement is sought. Before moving to Taligent in 1992, Guglielmi was corporate vice-president and general manager of marketing and business development for IBM Personal Computer Co, and created its first marketing division.Observers expected him to carry the can for the failure of OS/2, but IBM Corp reassigned Lee Reiswig as general manager, technology and strategy for the Software Group. Reiswig will advise John Thompson, IBM senior vice-president and head of the software group. IBM has at last gone outside for an appointment, but only to be head of marketing for the software group, which was formed in January. It has gone to Compaq Computer Corp and tapped Gian Carlo Bisone for the position.
