Motorola Inc announced yesterday, at the Asia Telecom 97 show, a contract agreement with India’s telecommunications company Essar Commivision Ltd for the installation of up to 2,000 cable telephony lines in India. According to Motorola, the initial contract was worth around $5m but could eventually be worth much more. Essar expects to install lines to connect up to 200,000 lines. Motorola said the deal would help Essar Commivision, a joint venture between India’s Essar Group and Bell Atlantic Corp, to turn from a cellular operator into a full multi-media service supplier.
