MOTOROLA SETS ILLINOIS CELLULAR PLANT, RESEARCH BASE IN AUSTRALIA

Motorola Inc has announced plans for a 1m square-foot cellular equipment manufacturing plant in Harvard, Illinois, which is expected to open by the first quarter of 1996 and to create 2,000 to 3,000 new jobs. Some 40% of the labour force for the new plant is expected to come from over the border in Wisconsin. The plant will be Motorola’s fourth major cellular facility in the world and its second in the US.Motorola also announced that it will establish a Motorola Technology Centre in Australia, which is planned to employ about 400 skilled research and development engineers by the year 2000. It will have three divisions: software development, wireless communications research, and design and systems integration, and export some $250m a year.
