Will there be enough space in space to accommodate Motorola Inc’s ambitious plans for building up to 500 satellites to be launched between 2000 and 2010? The eight programs, detailed in a request for proposals for rocket launch services, include replacements for the Iridium LLC satellite network due to start operations in September 1998, for two further generations of Iridium systems, and for the proposed internet in the Sky, Celestri and M-Star projects intended to compete with the Bill Gates-funded Teledesic Inc venture (CI No 3,184).
