Motorola has reported sales of $5.04bn for the first quarter of 2010, a decrease of 6.1% compared to $5.37bn for the same period last year.

Gross margin for the quarter was $1.79bn, compared to $1.5bn for the same period a year ago. The company reported operating earnings of $69m, compared to an operating loss of $291m for the same period last year.

For the quarter ended April 03, 2010, the company posted net earnings of $69m for the first quarter of 2010, compared to net loss of $231m for the same period last year.

Mobile devices segment sales were down 9% to $1.6bn, home segment sales were down 18% to $838m, network segment sales were down 7% to $896m, while enterprise mobility solutions segment sales were up 6% to $1.7bn compared to same period last year.

The company shipped 8.5 million handsets including 2.3 million smartphones. During the quarter, the company generated positive operating cash flow of $485m.

These businesses continue to deliver best-in-class market leadership and financial returns.”
