Motorola Inc has postponed a planned $3bn semiconductor manufacturing plant in West Creek, Virginia, due to uncertainties in the chip market, according to Semiconductor Business News. The plant, which was to have been Motorola’s largest ever plant investment, was to employ 2,500 people and was originally earmarked to make PowerPCs. Motorola bought 230 acres of land for the plant back in 1995 (CI No 2,746), but then put off the decision to go ahead with its construction until the end of last year (CI No 3,304). There is now no timetable for if, and when, work will resume.
