MOTOROLA PLAYS DOWN DEFECTION OF KEY 88000 RISC TEAM PLAYER

By CBR Staff Writer

Following Motorola Inc’s consolidation of the development, design and marketing of its 88000 RISC chip in with its mainstream 68000 activity (CI No 991), Roger Rees, a principal member of the 88000 design team has resigned. Rees joined Motorola three years ago to investigate alternative microprocessor technologies, and as yet unconfirmed rumours suggest that he may be involved in a new start-up hardware venture, with some Motorola colleagues. Motorola issued a statement saying Rees had completed his work on the 88000, and that the original RISC designers remain as members of the high-end microprocessor division, now headed by Tom Guntner. The team is actively involved in new developments related to the 88000 family, it said.
