MOTOROLA PLANS GLOBAL SATELLITE NET TO PLUG GAPS LEFT BY CELLULAR

Motorola Inc yesterday revealed details of its ambitious plan to rule the cellular telephone world by teaming with partners to invest some $2,100m launching 77 low-orbit satellites around the world to a offer low-capcity cellular service in rural areas. It hopes to put the first satellite up in 1994 and complete the system in 1996. It reckons it needs 700,000 subscribers world wide to break even. Details, see page two.
