Motorola Inc is offering a chip version of an IBM-compatible floppy disk controller, and according the new part controls up to four disk drives or tape back-up devices in any combination. Supported formats include 360Kb, 720Kb, 1.2Mb and 1.44Mb with transfer rates of 250K-bits, 300K-bits or 500K-bits per second. The circuit has variable write precompensation, data scan capability for single sector or entire track, TTL interface logic, multi-sector and multi-track transfer capacity, and support of both DMA and non-DMA data transfer. The MCS3201 is shipping now and costs $5 each in large OEM quantities.
