In an effort to beat off the challenge from L M Ericsson Telefon AB, which makes both the switching and radio equipment and the telephones for cellular systems, Motorola Inc has signed Northern Telecom Ltd to a non-exclusive agreement to develop an open systems standard so that its radios and telephones and Northern Telecom’s switches will work together; others can also join in.
