Motorola Inc has come out with a new line of four-function radio telephones called Lingo, designed specifically to exploit the standard and all the new features being offered by Specialised Mobile Radio operators. The phones offer the traditional Specialised Mobile Radio capability of voice despatch, enabling the user to broadcast to a fleet of receivers at the same time, but also offer a straight two-way dialled digital telephone capability, include a small screen that can display 16 text messages of up to 140 characters each for use on a paging service. And a personal computer can be linked to the phone to transmit data, eliminating the need for a modem; operators are expected to price them at $500 to $700.
