Motorola Inc is to form a new division for its microcontroller products, the company announced at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose yesterday. The Motorola Microcontroller Division will become part of the company’s Transportation Systems Group, reflecting Motorola’s interest in the automotive industry companies as major customers of its microcontroller products (CI No 3,389). Typical vehicles now contain at lest ten microcontrollers. The new unit, headed by Chung Ding Tam, will be responsible for all of Motorola’s 8-bit HC product ranges. Transportation Systems also has responsibility for Motorola’s M- Core 32-bit processor core products. PowerPC and 68000-based products continue within the Networking and Computing group.
