Motorola Inc has formed a new internet and networking group to focus on what it is calling Smart Access technology. The idea is to open up networks to personal devices such as cell phones, personal digital assistants, PCs and pagers, as well as to traditional network access devices such as frame relay, cable modems and routers. Motorola ING is intended to bring together the company’s activities in voice, data and video integration activities. It will include four core businesses corporate networking, broadband communications, wireless content services and platform software. Motorola acquisitions such as handwriting recognition company Lexicon Corp, PDA company Starfish Software Inc, and companies it has invested in, such as NetSpeak Corp, Broadcast.com and @Home Corp, will be associated with the group.
