Motorola Inc is being sued for alleged patent infringement relating to four modem technologies, it has emerged. But the Arlington Heights, Illinois company claims not to have seen the lawsuit and is refusing to comment. General Patent Corp International has accused the Arlington Heights, Illinois company of infringing the Connector Interface, Integrated Connector and Modem, Multiple Connector Interface and Programmable Connector patents, used in personal computer card modems that operate in notebook and laptop machines. Monsey, New York-based General Patent claims to have notified Motorola of the infringement back in 1995 and tried to avoid litigation. General Patent International describes itself as a technology transfer company, devoted to bringing innovative technologies to the market. The company owns a series of patents originating from proprietary technologies from research centers to individual inventors from the former Soviet Union, Israel and the US. Last year General Patent brought lawsuits against IBM Corp and US Robotics Corp over infringements of patents in the same area (CI No 3,124).
