Motorola Computer Group (MCG) has stepped up its collaboration with Caldera Systems Inc by announcing that its SLX Series of network appliances will ship with the latest version of Caldera’s OpenLinux, 2.3. MCG’s emS Series for telecommunications, imaging and industrial applications will also run the new version of OpenLinux. MCG says its customers appreciate Linux’s low licensing costs and the free availability of its source code. The SLX series is aimed at the web access, security, caching and VPN markets, while the emS-ATXI, which runs on Intel x86 microprocessors in a 19 rackmount chassis, is built and priced for OEMs.

OpenLinux 2.3 was designed as a hands-free and Y2K-certified operating system. Based on the 2.2.10 kernel, it boasts remote mass installation capabilities, an improved Lizard Linux Wizard, Applixware’s Microsoft-clone Office Suite, StarOffice 5.1, WordPerfect 8.0, Netscape 4.61, a graphical user interface called the K Desktop Environment and RAID support for IBM, Compaq and Mylex systems. It’s being sold as Linux for Business. OpenLinux 2.3 isn’t just new and improved, enthused CEO Ransom Love, it’s faster, easier and can perform mass installations remotely – which is big news for IS directors and CTOs.
