ERG Ltd and Motorola IncÆs Worldwide Smartcard Solutions Division have won a $78m contract to supply an integrated smart card fare collection system for the public transport network of Singapore. The Land Transport Authority of Singapore awarded the contract for the Enhanced Integrated Fare System to the ERG/Motorola alliance after a seven month review. Five public transport operators will use the system, which includes around 3,750 buses, mass rapid transit (MRT) and light rapid transit operations. There will be over 22,000 readers and an initial 5 million smart cards, making it one of the largest integrated smart card based transit systems in the world.

ERG, an Australian company, will provide the back-end central clearing house and data processing network, with Motorola providing smart card technology and support services. ItÆs due to be fully operational in 2002. Local companies Singaporean Technologies Computer Systems, Keppel Engineering Ltd and Knowledge Engineering Ltd are also members of the consortium.

Last month, ERG and Motorola won a contract with the Transport Authority of Berlin for a field trial for smart card electronic ticketing system covering Berlin and the surrounding greater Brandenburg area.
