The founder of British startup Mind Candy, which created the hit Moshi Monsters game, has been named in the New Year Honours list.

Michael Acton Smith has been made an OBE in the list, after starting the firm 10 years ago.

Moshi Monsters now has more than 80 million registered players across the world and was turned into a film, released at the end of 2013.

It was created in 2008 and targeted at six to 12-year-olds, and lets users adopt, name and care for a monster in Monstro City, where children can play games and interact with each other.

Other tech figures named in the list were Tech City CEO Joanna Shields, who becomes an OBE, Netmums website co-founders Sarah Russell, Siobhan Freegard and Cathy Court, all receiving OBEs, and ex-ARM CEO Warren East, who was made a CBE.
