Steepler Ltd, one of the largest computer distribution firms in Russia, has signed an distributor agreement with Rank Xerox Ltd: under the agreement Steepler will be responsible for the distribution of Rank Xerox laser printers in Russia and other former Soviet republics; alhough the agreement covers the whole spectrum of Xerox equipment, the main accent will be the on distribution of Xerox 4900 colour laser printers; Steepler said its well-developed dealer network enabled it to prove it was able to provide satisfactory service on Xerox printers; it hopes to sell $1m of the printers in 1995.

A distribution agreement for personal computers has been signed by Lamport Co Ltd and AT&T Corp.

Stilan’s Moscow-based subsidiary, Stilan-Electronics, has signed a $1m contract with TDK Corp on delivery of floppy disks and magneto-optical platters in Russia: delivery will be via the Japanese trading company Marubeni Corp; Stilan is one of the Japanese firm’s major partners in the floppy disk trade; TDK disk sales in Russia in 1994 were $4.5m.

Russian language versions of Adobe Systems Inc’s PageMaker Classic and PhotoShop are now available.

Integration firm IBS has signed a distributor agreement with Californian Network General Corp.

Ing C Olivetti & Co SpA says selling to banks now account for 30% of the company’s turnover in Russia: about 60 Russian banks are clients of the company; among the largest projects was a turnkey system for the new building of Unikombank; a similar project has been undertaken for Neftegazstrojbank, a bank for the oil and gas industry.

Microsoft Russia has held a series of seminars in Vladivostok, organised by its distributors in the region, Red Com and Vladivostok Computers Ltd.

The recently privatised Moscow-based NII Radiofiziki, radio physics, research institute, which is now known as AO Radiofiziki, and in which Moscow-based Kami Corp has a 35% of stake, will begin assembling Kami and Datatech Enterprises Co of Taiwan, that is DTK, computers on its new assembly line which will also be used to test Acer Inc and Compaq Computer Corp boxes at the request of clients; Kami is distributor of all three makes.

The KGB lives on in the form of the Federal Agency of Governmental Communication & Information, or FAPSI, and assembly and service company Technoserv has run into trouble with the agency because of its new line of radiation-shielded computers: the company has had to postpone several agreements on the installation of information security systems following the recent presidential decree which requires all information protection devices to be licensed by the agency: Technoserv has now applied for a licence but the fate of the application is uncertain.

The largest distributor of Acer Inc computers in Russia, CompuLink, has now won recognition from Unisys Corp: it has a 36-month agreement to distribute the latter’s personal computers and servers.
