Chuvashia Mobile has been formed in the city of Cheboksary, Russia: the venture was in co-operation the UNICEL cellular communication network, part of the Guthrie GTS group of companies; the company was formed as a joint venture enterprise by the local Svyazinform communication company, which holds 30%, and Dutch company Vostok Mobile NV; all equipment for the network will be supplied by AT&T Corp and mobile telephones by Motorola Inc; the network will support 1,000 phone numbers in a radius of 25 miles.

The city of Tver’s cellular telephone system is about to get a boost with the installation by Ericsson Radio Systems AB of an NMT450i system, following the signing of a contract between the Swedish company and Tver Mobile Communications: the network will have an initial capacity of 2,500 customers and will serve Tver, Torzhok, Rzhev and Bezhetsk; its commercial launch is due on October 30; the system will become an important piece in the chain between Moscow and St Petersburg, and will also help the city telephone network in Tver, since it involves fixed radio terminals to boost city capacity and penetration into areas previously not served by the public switched telephone network; Tverskaya cellular communications was founded by A/O Electrosvias and TOO Moscow Cellular Communications.

And Ericsson Radio Systems AB has signed a contract to install a NMT450i cellular network in the Sverdlovsk region with Uralvestkom, a joint venture between Russian Telecommunications Development Corp, the Ekaterinburg International Telephone Station and Ural Telecom: the network’s initial capacity will 2,000 users; the launch, planned for August, will be in Ekaterinburg and Nizhny Tagil.

The Russian Federation Saving Bank has signed an agreement with the Austrian company BGS Industrials on the implementation of a Smart Card system in 25 Russian regions: in April 1994 a similar agreement was signed on the distribution of Smart Cards in 16 regions; at present Sberbank Russian Federation has 2,000 card users; other banks with a Smart Card customer base are the Siberian Trade bank with 30,000 Zolotaya Korona cards, the Optimum bank with 5,000 Optimum cards, and the Siberian bank with 2,000 Russkaya Karta Smart Cards.
