MOSCOW FOCUS: TATARSTAN CONSIDERS SMART CARD SYSTEM

The newspaper Izvestiya reports that the oil rich republic of Tatarstan is considering a large smart card-based system that is to resolve problems connected with circulation of cash in the republic, which is part of the Russian Federation. Technical requirements are apparently now being established and commercial banks are being selected to participate in the project. The republic plans to issue the first 30,000 cards during 1998.
