IBM has added an application development tool studio to the Application Server and Performance Pack that make up its WebSphere product line. Big Blue also plans to incorporate WebSphere in future releases of the IBM Suite and IBM Enterprise Suite. The move comes as part of IBM’s bid for web application server respectability. Its rivals – notably Silverstream and Sun’s NetDynamics – like to boast of the completeness of their integrated server-and-tool offerings. Called WebSphere Studio, the new toolbox includes a Web Development Workbench, servlet generation wizards, VisualAge for Java, NetObjects ScriptBuilder, NetObjects Fusion and NetObjects BeanBuilder. The package will be available in October for Windows NT and 9x, priced at $495.
