MODEMS: ROCKWELL CHIPS ON HOLD, HAYES HEDGES BETS

Rockwell International Corp is putting volume ships of its 56K modem chip sets back by two weeks, and Motorola Inc is having to put pack shipments of its own Modem-SurFR modems, which use the set, as a result. Seal Beach, California-based Rockwell blames performance problems with its K56flex chip set. Meantime Hayes Microcomputer Corp has decide to hedge its bets ahead of a standard being agreed, and with sell products using the rival US Robotics Corp technology as well as the Rockwell chip set.
