In 1992, the Chinese city had just 10,000 mobile users. But the figure shot up in the 1990s, and in 2001 over 1.8 million new users signed up. Now half of the people in east China’s largest city have a mobile.
Mobiles beat fixed lines in Shanghai
In the week that Shanghai finally switched off its analog mobile network, the city's authorities reported that the number of mobile subscribers has reached 6.2 million. This is greater than the number of fixed-line connections, which is around six million.
