Extended Systems and Pointsec have revealed plans to offer mobile solutions to enterprises.

The partnership will enable each company to offer a secure solution to enterprise customers, consisting of an integrated original equipment manufacturer (OEM) version of each other’s software. The combination will work to produce a secure mobile solution that is capable of running on any platform and will include mail and messaging, device management, and mobile applications.

Extended Systems’ OneBridge allows organizations to widen the reach of enterprise applications into the mobile environment, administer the many mobile devices, and maintain software on most mobile device types, including Symbian, Microsoft Windows Mobile and Palm. Pointsec, meanwhile, supplies mobile device security components for a wide variety of mobile devices.

The alliance could well be a successful one as it combines two leading mobile software firms. Pointsec has considerable experience providing enterprise security software for laptops, PDAs and smartphones, while Extended Systems boasts an enterprise customer base of more than 2,500, including companies as varied as 20th Century Fox, DaimlerChrysler, Electrolux, and FedEx.

At last two vendors in the mobile space have realized that what the enterprise customer wants, especially the smaller organizations, is a simple-to-implement, end-to-end solution, not an assortment of technologies. Indeed, this one solution could prove to be the answer to the two major concerns of the IT manager struggling with limited resources to control a growing problem, namely security and management.

The solution avoids having to use multiple vendor technologies that require integration and testing before deployment and the overhead of dealing with a number of suppliers. This type of joined up approach is to be commended and up to now has been a rare occurrence in the mobility solution market place.
