MOBILE RADIO: NIPPON TELEGRAPH INTO NEXTEL ACT…

Late yesterday, Nextel Communications Inc followed up its major asset purchase from Motorola Inc (see below) with news of a technical alliance with Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp under which engineers employed by the Japanese phone giant in the US and Japan will help Nextel in designing and managing its North American Specialised Mobile Radio network sites. Nextel will get access to Nippon Telegraph’s telecommunications expertise, and the Japanese firm will pay $75m for new Nextel Class A shares about 1% of the enlarged equity, to seal the agreement.
