The top three mobile phone equipment manufacturers, Nokia Oy, LM Ericsson AB, and Motorola Inc are formalizing their plans to develop standardized software to internet-enable mobile phones, and have formed a joint venture company with cut down internet software company Unwired Planet Inc, called Wireless Application Protocol Ltd. The company is to be responsible for setting up the specification for the Wireless Application Protocol, a standard for the internet-enabled wireless devices on various types of network, and for recruiting other companies to add to the protocol. The four companies have already been planning the development of the protocol since June last year (CI No 3,192), and claim that a world standard will give economies of scale, and will encourage other wireless device manufacturers on board.
