Mobile and tablet users will make 195 billion mobile commerce transactions by 2019, according to research.

Analyst Juniper Research says the figure, which will be up from 72 billion this year, will be boosted by high growth rates in the near field communications sector.

The launch of Apple Pay will play a key role, as will a surge in micro-payments for in-app purchases, particularly within areas such as social gaming.

"For the first time, organisations can monetise consumers who would otherwise have been excluded either because they lacked a credit card or because they were unwilling to enter card details online," said Windsor Holden, Juniper’s head of consultancy and forecasting.

The report says adoption rates spike following the launch of mobile ticketing deployments, suggesting a pent-up demand for such services.

Juniper also suggest a significant transactional migration from desktop to mobile is taking place as consumers increasingly make purchases on their devices while watching TV.

The analyst says vendors should do more than simply focus on payment systems, and they should emphasise the links between mobile payment and loyalty in order to engage retailers.

The results are taken from the recently released survey, ‘Mobile Commerce Markets: Key Sector Strategies, Opportunities & Forecasts 2014-2019’.
