German carrier MobilCom AG yesterday announced the acquisition of 75% of Comtech GmbH, a Waibling-based computer retail chain comprising 123 stores. Buedelsdorf-based MobilCom will add Comtech’s outlets to its own network of 180 stores, prior to launching a free-PC incentivized internet service provider scheme, said CEO Gerhard Schmid. Schmid added that Mobilcom will seek to acquire the remaining 25% of Comtech in the future. The acquisition is part of MobilCom’s strategy of strengthening its internet market presence. Earlier this year it formed a partnership with Cisco in IP telephony as well as with Inktomi Corp in e-commerce. It acquired the German-language search engine DINO-Online in April and now wants to float its business internet provider Topnet EDV und Datenkommunications AG.
