Mitsui Bank and Toshiba Corp have developed an expert system called Escort (popular name) for the diagnosis and repair of faults in on-line banking systems, using Toshiba’s ExPearls shell: it advises a network operator on the measures to be taken for faults in any one of 10 connected systems, including BANCS – the integrated online network of all the national and city banks, online credit systems, and the Mitsui Bank’s on-line accounting system: the knowledge base currently contains only 74 rules, but more are planned before the system goes live in the autumn.
