Mitsubishi Electric Corp has increased its activity in the cellular equipment market with the UK launch yesterday of a handset with which it hopes to capture 20% of the British market. The MT-3, a hand-held portable is already available in Scandinavia, and its arrival will be followed by the European wide launch of a trans-mobile version in the first quarter of next year, and a budget mobile phone. The products are being introduced by the telecommunications arm of Mitsubishi which is also working on digital cellular products for 1992 and fosters ambitions of entering the digital cordless telephone market. Mitsubishi already sells cellular phones OEM to British Telecom and Tactico but wants to establish its own brand name to have a chance in the much bigger digital cellular market, said Peter Elliot, marketing director at Mitsubishi Business Systems. Mitsubishi estimates the total market for cellular telephones will exceed 430,000 by the end of the year with hand-held ones growing fastest.
