Mitsubishi Electronics America Inc used JavaOne to show off its range of mobile PCs running JavaOS and HotJava Views interfaces instead of Windows95. Not that anyone will be able to buy one any time soon. It’s using the JavaSoft flavor of JavaOS which is to be superseded by SunSoft’s ChorusOS-based system software and in any case Mitsubishi points out that JavaOS as it exists has no power management functionality or support for PCMCIA cards and the like. At $2,000 or so the devices are overkill for a JavaOS products, Mitsubishi thinks. Its JavaOS products could be up to two years away.
