With the release of Windows NT by Microsoft Corp, MIPS Technologies Inc R4000 and R4400 RISC-based personal computers to run the thing are being rushed to market. Lenexa, Kansas-based DeskStation Technology Inc has launched an introductory-priced model of its Evolution Series of R4400-based machines for NT. The rPC 44LE – for Limited Edition – is claimed to be the most powerful Windows NT machine in its price range. The rPC 44LE has a 50MHz-external, 100MHz-internal processor and is claimed to be at least 25% faster than the Pentium; it is being pitched as a server and a system for computer-aided design, scientific analysis, desktop publishing and imaging. It comes in a mini-tower with 16Mb to 64Mb main memory, 512Kb of secondary cache; SCSI-II subsystem with 240Mb disk and Sony Corp CD-ROM drive; S3-based video board, 3.5 floppy, keyboard and mouse and NT pre-installed for $4,500. It is available this month.
