MIPS Computer Systems Inc on the planned VRX version of the 64-bit R4000 RISC chip, in which it will provide the CMOS design technology and related information to MIPS so that MIPS can design the VRX chip, ceding to NEC exclusive rights to market the thing for one year after its certification by MIPS, the VRX chip will feature low power consumption of less than 2W at 40MHz, and five times better price-performance than the R4000, while being compatible with it; NEC expects the the VRX chip will answer market needs for a cheaper and easier-to-use RISC and says it plans to release the part to the market between July and December 1993; NEC says that it also plans to do new versions of the R4000, to be clocked at 75MHz and 100MHz.
