MIPS Computer Systems, Sunnyvale, which had been using foundries, has now licensed LSI Logic Corp, Performance Semiconductor Corp and Integrated Device Technology Inc to make and sell MIPS’ 32-bit RISC microprocessor, floating point co-processor chip and other peripheral components. Implementing the parts in Performance’s PACE 1 CMOS technology is expected to lead to a significant improvement in performance over the current 10 MIPS. Each of the licencees will work with MIPS to develop future members of the RISC family, and gives them rights to market the MIPS microprocessors with the system software that has been written for them.
