MIPS Computer Systems Inc has been comparing manufacturers’ claims for MIPS ratings with the performances indicated by the first Systems Performance Evaluation Council SPEC set of 10 benchmarks, reports the Wall Street Journal: the upshot is that MIPS’ machine rated at 20 MIPS performs about on a par on integer programs with the 34.5 MIPS model of IBM’s RS/6000 machine, and that a Sun Microsystems model rated at 12.5 MIPS delivers half the performance of the IBM box on integer work; DEC’s VAX workstations have SPEC ratings about 90% of their claimed MIPS ratings, but its RISC workstations come out at only 83%.
