MIPS AGREEMENTS WITH SUMITOMO, MARUBENI

By CBR Staff Writer

MIPS Computer Systems Inc of Sunnyvale California has signed Sumitomo Electric Industries to an agreement under which the two will co-operate on a joint survey of prospects for the MIPS line of RISC computer systems and applications servers for the workstation and technical computer market in Japan. Under the co-operative relationship, Sumitomo Electric will develop new compute servers based on MIPS’ RISC technology, with the intention of strengthening its current Ustation technical workstation line and expanding its business in the technical computing market. And MIPS has also signed a distribution for Japan with Marubeni Electronics for its M series systems and board-level products; Marubeni, which did $55m in 1986 on computer and office automation systems, will market them OEM.
