The Defence Medical Information Capability Program will be used by personnel from all three Medical Services and the Defence Dental Service, from peacetime use in the UK through to frontline battlefield situations.
The system will allow medical clinicians and dentists to access elements of patients’ medical records ‘anywhere, anytime’, as well as providing a range of reference material from approved sources to assist in diagnosis and treatment planning.
It will also build an extensive data warehouse that will provide information on the incidence of disease and battle injuries and the outcomes of treatment regimes enabling Defence Medical Services to provide the most effective medical care.
As well as this, it will enable online access to appointment details making the process of booking appointments at hospitals quicker and easier.
During deployed operations, medical staff will have access to these records on stand alone systems which will synchronize the data on a regular basis with the centralized records held in the UK.
Vice admiral Ian Jenkins, MoD surgeon general, commented, The Defence Medical Services are excited by the opportunity to work with DMICP. For the first time, doctors and dentists in the Armed Forces will have immediate access worldwide to complete medical records, supported by the latest clinical software. This will allow them to deliver better, quicker treatment to their patients. The potential benefits to the entire Armed Forces from improved health standards are enormous.
