America Online Inc, Vienna, Virginia, says that it now has more than 3.5m subscribers for its services, making it the largest on-line service in the world, it said: America Online offers electronic mail, conferencing software, computing support, interactive magazines and ne wspapers as well as providing access to services of the Internet.
Innovex Inc, Hopkins, Minnesota, has agreed to be the primary supplier of thin-film lead wire assemblies for San Jose, California-based disk drive component manufacturer Read-Rite Corp: the deal becomes effective October 1, and is renewable on an annual basis, Innovex said; Thomas Haley, Innovex chairman and chief executive said the agreement defuses earlier speculation suggesting an imminent phase-out of Innovex technology.
Tokyo-based DDI Corp’s president Yusai Okuyama told the government’s Telecommunications Council that a break-up of Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp would be vital to introduce dynamism and fair competition into Japan’s market: Okuyama was speaking at hearings by the council, which is discussing whether to break up Nippon; Okuyama said that a huge, private monopoly has harmed the Japanese market.
The Telecommunications Authority of Singapore said it has awarded its third licence to provide public access to the Internet to Cyberway Pte Ltd, a unit of SPH Multimedia Pte Ltd and ST Telecommunications Pte Ltd : it said Cyberway would be charged an initial one-time fee of $315,000 for the licence and would also pay an annual fee equivalent to 1% of its gross revenue, but it gave no further financial details.
Toronto-based Delrina Corp will unveil new Internet software this week designed to take full advantage of Windows95: the company said that Cyberjack, which helps users to navigate the Internet will be the world’s first 32-bit integrated Internet product to work fully with Windows95; Delrina, which is being acquired by Symantec Corp, said that Cyberjack is expected to be released in the next few months; pricing details were not available.
Englewood, Colorado-based Tele-Communications Inc has formed a TCI Telephony Services Inc business unit which will develop and manage the company’s venture with Sprint Corp into the local telephone market: the unit will oversee all telephone related activities within TCI and co-ordinate with the Sprint venture, the company said; Jerry Gaines, a TCI senior vice presdient, will head the Telephony Services unit, the company said.
Glenview, Illinois-based Zenith Electronics Corp says it is targeting the Mexican cable television market with its new Hipervision product line, ranging from add-on addressable decoders to advanced set-top decoders with on-screen graphics, which it demonstrated at the Canitec ’95 trade show in Guadalajara, Mexico: the company said that add-on addressability provides a clear migration path for cable operators to provide full-featured set-top devices, and should aid the entire local cable television industry.

Xerox Corp division XSoft, Palo Alto, California, is to provide multilingual software support for America Online Inc’s NaviSoft line: the software will enable NaviSoft users to navigate the Internet using familiar natural language rather than computer commands; it said XSoft’s linguistic databases for English, French and German will be incorporated into America Online’s NaviPress and NaviServer World Wide Web publishing products; financial terms of the pact were not given.

Motorola Inc said the Philipino Telephone Corp, the Philippines largest cellular telephone provider has awarded Motorola’s International Cellular Infrastructure Division a $270m contract to expand and enhance its Mobiline cellular phone system: Mobiline is Philipino Telephone’s nationwide cellular telephone system which currently has 130,000 subscribers in greater Manila; the new system will have capacity to serve more than 500,000 customers in the city; Philipino Telecom, a landline telephone provider since 1968, also has a nationwide paging system and other wireless services across the country.
Mitac Europe Ltd, the UK-based division of Taiwanese personal computer company Mitac International Corp is adding 45,000 square feet to its factory in Telford, Shropshire: the extension will double the manufacturing plant’s size and the company’s capacity; when completed Mitac will produce more than 40,000 personal computers a month; the building comes shortly after it announced it was establishing a 60,000 square foot factory to build machines for Compaq Computer Corp.
