Ameritech Corp reaffirmed its long-term commitment to its Polish cellular phone joint venture with the country’s state-owned telephone operator Telekomunikacja Polska SA and France Telecom. A report in the Rzeczpospolita newspaper quoted unofficial sources saying that the US firm might sell its 24.5% stake in PTK Centertel SA because it thought the analog system it runs is not profitable enough, but Ameritech in Poland denied this. Ameritech and its partner in the Centertel venture have been locked in a legal dispute with the Polish authorities over two recently- awarded licenses for a more advanced digital cellular system (CI No 2,820) The two firms have launched arbitration proceedings against Poland, saying it should have given Centertel a license without tender as envisaged in a 1991 letter of intent.
