AT&T Corp has signed a contract worth $19m to provide advanced transmission equipment to two major cable trunk projects in China, reports the China Daily. The deal was signed last Wednesday with the Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications, it said. AT&T is to provide four Synchronous Digital Hierarchy systems to the Peking-Wuhan-Guangzhou cable trunk and two synchronized digital systems to the Changsha-Nanning line. The equipment will have a speed of 2.5Gbps, the fastest of its kind in the world, the newspaper said, and will speed up and increase capacity of the system between China’s capital and the booming southern city of Guangzhou as part of a government plan to develop a nationwide communications grid system. AT&T is already developing optical networks in 11 other provinces and the new deals mean that the company will account for 80% of China’s synchronized digital market.
