Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co Ltd says the new optic fiber cable it plans to lay across the Pacific will have capacity of over 1.2m circuits, 10 times that of the cable it is close to completing: the new cable would have a capacity of over 100Gbps compared with 10Gbps for the current one; earlier this month Kokusai said it would start a feasibility study with AT&T Corp for the TPC-6 Trans-Pacific Cable, to link Japan and the US by around the year 2000, to cope with expected growth in demand; the two are now laying the TPC-5 cable, which will link Japan and the US by the end of 1996 with a capacity of about 120,000 circuits; financing methods for the new technology needed to achieve the desired capacity will be included in the feasibility study.
