How will the Internet of Things transform the roundabout town?

BT and networking startup Neul are supplying the technology to Milton Keynes.

By Amy-Jo Crowley

Milton Keynes is looking to make itself more intelligent by rolling out a network that will connect a variety of devices, sensors and applications via the Internet.

Known as the Internet of Things (IoT), the project is being implemented by Cambridge-based networking startup Neul and BT over the next eighteen months.

Neul’s Weightless base stations will be installed across Milton Keynes to provide coverage for mobile and static sensors, while BT manages the network services for the applications.

The project, which is also supported by Milton Keynes Council, Future Cities Catapult and The Open University, will allow innovators to use the infrastructure as a test bed for commercial applications, products and services.

Geoff Snelson, director of Strategy at Milton Keynes Council, said: "Milton Keynes is already known as a pioneer in the use of technology to make our city more efficient, as evidenced by the current MK:Smart project."

Stan Boland, CEO of Neul, added: "Neul’s low-power, open-access, wide-area network solution provides the key to unlocking a vast variety of new applications, previously impossible or uneconomical with existing communications technologies."
