New York-based Millicom Inc’s mission to turn America on to the British concept of the Personal Communications Network has been rewarded with experimental licences for its PCN America Inc subsidiary to construct and operate Personal Communications Nets in Houston, Texas and Orlando, Florida. The handsets for the system will be low-cost, wallet size, lightweight, and low power and will incorporate microprocessor based Smart Card technology so that once the user inserts the card in any handset, he or she can be reached even if the caller doesn’t know where the user is. The card enables the user to choose and store in memory, specific features and services. Under Millicom’s licence from the Federal Communications Commission, it will use spread spectrum radio transmission used by the military for years, enabling the system to share radio wavebands with other commercial users.
