California Microwave Inc says that its Sunnyvale, California-based Microwave Radio Corp subsidiary has received two initial orders for digital microwave radio systems worth $3m: these orders are the first in the European personal and mobile wireless communications market, projected to be a multi-billion dollar industry by the year 2000; deliveries have started and are scheduled to be complete by the end of this fiscal year; currently, the cost of linking cell stations to a network switch through leased telephone lines represents 40% to 60% of the operating cost of the network, but cellular system operators can reduce this by owning the transmission medium, the digital radio systems; the orders use the firm’s MR-40DR 38GHz radio system.
